Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
